The colours correspond to the flags used to mark the countdown sequence. 30 minute register becomes a 15 minute recorder, with color-coded zones to enable a yachtsman to keep track of the countdown to the start of a race. The Skippers were modified so that the sub dial hand tick over every 30 seconds, so the normal Cal. (There was a very early version, which borrowed a case from the Carrera range).Įven though this has it’s own model number (15640), many models have the ‘11063V’ (like this example) markings on the case, not all, some do bear 15640. Jeff Stein from OTD, refers to them as the “Hermit crabs of the Heuer range”. You could almost class it as an Autavia, as it shares the cases, from the very early Skippers to this version, the last. There doesn’t seem to be that many around compared to it’s Autavia cousins. 15 Heuers, the Skippers are my clear favourites. I love the deep gloss black dial and the splash of colour the yacht timer sub dial lends to the design. It was in need of a little tidying up, so off it went to have a spa treatment, and the results are amazing (Thanks Abel – again!).

I managed to wrestle this one from the original Swedish owner (thanks David). If the Rolex Sub is the king of underwater, this is king on it. I love them, they have the motorsport inspired heritage, but re-designed for yacht racing. The Skipper seems to be the dark horse of the Heuer family, I can’t quite put my finger on why, but they have something quite cool, underdog-ness about them.
